Why a sitemap matters
A sitemap.xml is a list of the pages you want crawled. Crawlers can find pages on their own by following links, but a sitemap makes the job reliable: it surfaces pages buried deep in your navigation and tells crawlers where to look first. That matters more as AI assistants lean on the same crawl data to understand your catalogue.

How to install it
Shopify
- Shopify auto-generates sitemap.xml at yourstore.com/sitemap.xml, so you usually do not need to upload one.
- Use this tool to audit it, or to build a supplementary list of URLs.
- Make sure your robots.txt has a Sitemap line pointing to it.
WordPress / WooCommerce
- If your SEO plugin already outputs a sitemap, prefer that.
- Otherwise upload the generated sitemap.xml to your site root over SFTP.
- Add a Sitemap line to robots.txt and submit it in Google Search Console.
Next.js / custom
- Prefer a generated sitemap (app/sitemap.ts) so it stays current.
- For a static list, place sitemap.xml in public/.
- Reference it from robots.txt and submit it in Google Search Console.

Does my store already have a sitemap?
Probably. Most platforms, including Shopify, generate one automatically at yourstore.com/sitemap.xml. Check there first. This tool helps when you need a custom or supplementary sitemap.
Where do I submit my sitemap?
Add a Sitemap line to your robots.txt, and submit the URL in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools so crawlers pick it up faster.
Do I need lastmod, changefreq, and priority?
They are optional. lastmod is the most useful because it hints at freshness. Search engines largely ignore changefreq and priority now, so a clean list of URLs is the priority.
How many URLs can one sitemap hold?
A single sitemap can hold up to 50,000 URLs. Beyond that you split into multiple sitemaps behind a sitemap index.
