Why llms.txt matters
An llms.txt file is a simple, structured map of your site written for AI. Instead of leaving an assistant to guess its way through your navigation and markup, you hand it a clean list: who you are, what you sell, and the exact pages that matter, each with a short description.
It is an emerging convention, not an official standard, and search engines do not use it today. So treat it as a low-cost, forward-looking signal rather than a magic switch. It is quick to add, it cannot hurt, and the stores that adopt early tend to be the ones that show up cleanly when assistants summarise a category.
How to install it
Shopify
- Download the file below.
- In your admin, go to Content, then Files, and upload llms.txt (or add it through your theme or an app that serves root files).
- Confirm it loads at yourstore.com/llms.txt.
WordPress / WooCommerce
- Connect over SFTP or your host file manager.
- Upload llms.txt to the site root (the same folder as robots.txt).
- Confirm it loads at yoursite.com/llms.txt.
Next.js / custom
- Drop llms.txt into your public/ folder (or serve it from a route).
- Deploy.
- Confirm it loads at yourdomain.com/llms.txt.

Is llms.txt an official web standard?
No. It is a growing convention that AI tooling is starting to support. It is not backed by a standards body yet, so think of it as an early, low-effort signal rather than a requirement.
Will this help my Google ranking?
No. llms.txt is aimed at AI assistants, not search engines. Google does not read it. For traditional SEO you still want a sitemap and solid on-page structure.
Where do I put the file?
At the root of your domain, so it loads at yourstore.com/llms.txt, next to robots.txt.
